jim acosta caught up with him this morning. jim, give us a sense who he is. he got a lot of attention at the rnc convention last year. >> reporter: well, suzanne, he was a tea party favorite in the run-up to last november's elections, and it's interesting to note as a lot of americans seem to be saying at least in the polls that they want the congress to work together. they want republicans and democrats to work together on matters such as the fiscal cliff. they have sent more partisans into the capitol, and one of the those partisans is ted cruz. he's a tea party conservative and was the solicitor-general down in texas before running for the senate. he's a graduate of princeton and harvard and also the son of a cuban-american immigrant, but i had a chance to talk with him just briefly earlier this morning because he had been very critical of the negotiated agreement between mitch mcconnell and the vice president, joe biden, on the fiscal cliff. he made no bones about it when i talked to him heading into the capitol earlier this morning. here's what he had to

joining me now is virginia congressman jim moran. briefly, let me ask you first about the fiscal cliff because i have you here. you and your members will get back to work tomorrow. i'm wondering is there going to be a last ditch effort to avoid this and what do you think is going to happen? >> i think the likelihood is that we go over the cliff, martin. and, of course, that's my primary focus because my congressional district would be the hardest hit if beat go over the fiscal cliff. i've got tens of thousands of federal employees and a great deal of defense spending would be at risk. so if we don't suspend the sequester and it looks like this very small deal may not even achieve that, then i'd have to be a "no" vote. so if i had to guess right now, i don't think we're going to be able to reach a deal no matter how small it might be. of course, at the very best, all we would do is stumble forward for a couple more months until we hit the debt ceiling and then face another crisis which is really a crisis of confidence in the governmen

jim bitter min has a story from paris. jim? >> vladimir putin said if he wants to come to russia, good on him and they will give him a passport and a residency permit if that is what he wants. he is very well-known and involved in publicity campaigns and recently made a film about the mad monk of russia. in the course of making that film, they have intervened personally in order to get permission for the film company to shoot in the imperial palaces in russia. the two men have got a long standing relationship and in fact he has a relationship with russia. it's probably not so unusual that this proposal would have come down. it is however a little bit of a shock for some french. they said that the kind of things you hear on the street is that it's something of a coward for trying to avoid taxes. his response which was contained in a letter he sent to the prime minister here back before christmas. his response was look, i spend over the last 45 year, 145 million euros on taxes. no one can shame me about how much taxes that i have

i want to bring in jim clancy. i want to start with the government attacks today in and around damascus. what is the government's goal here? >> the government is extremely concerned. they're losing their grip on the suburbs of the capital. all of this is within ear shot of the presidential palace. but it is really -- i think it is only fair to say it to admit what is going on here. they are targeting civilians in whatever numbers they can find. the regime obviously frustrated, they have not been able to strike with any significant effect on the free syrian army, on the rebel and opposition groups and they have turned to civilians who are lining up, whether it is for bread or whether it is for fuel, some 75 people known to have been killed in this incident alone. it reflects the pattern that we're seeing here, don. a pattern of increased casualties. we were looking at a thousand casualties a month at one point. and now it is probably more than a thousand a week. we have been well over 100 for almost as long as i can
